Dan Weiss
Praised by the New York Times as one of "five drummers to watch," drummer and composer Dan Weiss has received extensive critical acclaim for his innovative contributions to contemporary jazz, including his unique integration of practices from Indian music traditions. A mainstay on the international jazz touring circuit, Weiss has performed with Rudresh Mahanthappa, David Binney, Ravi Coltrane, Vijay Iyer, Chris Potter, and numerous other renowned artists. He is also active as a composer, and has produced five recordings under his own name, including the recent releases Jhaptal Drumset Solo (Chhandayan, 2011) and his trio album, Timshel (Sunnyside Records, 2010). Weiss has performed at the world's top jazz festivals, and in addition to the drumset, he is a student of the tabla, which he studies with his guru Samir Chatterjee. He holds a degree in jazz percussion and classical composition from the Manhattan School of Music, and has taught at the Banff Centre, the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City, the Manhattan School of Music, and many others.
